SoM so kombinacija mikroprocesorja (CPU), Flash in RAM ter napajanja – vse na kompaktnem tiskanem vezju. Različni komunikacijski vmesniki se na rob ali spodnjo stran modula priključijo preko kontaktnih blazinic. Moduli SoM so prilotani na ustrezne nosilce, tako da niso potrebni nobeni dodatni priključki. Tako predstavljajo zmogljiv jedrni modul za ustvarjanje individualnih aplikacij.
